When I say "manufacturer", I mean like something an ordinary family there could buy. So no transport trucks or military vehicles.
Some South American countries have lots of resources, the population, the land, etc, and in Brazil's case, Fangio.
I mean, even among China, Korea, and Japan, you're looking at very different manufacturing bases, populations, systems of government, GDP per capita, territory sizes, etc, and yet all 3 manage to pump out a lot of stuff, some of which is very interesting and desirable.
Have any cars of that ilk ever come from South America?
(I met a Brazilian a few months ago who actually owned a Gurgel! He said it was "very basic...but lots of fun.")

larger companies like GM and VW have South American divisions, and have exclusive cars for those markets, and are made there.
However, recent times and neglect on spending from the government are killing the entire economy, and the automotive sector has been hit pretty hard.
and just so you know, some Chinese cars are sold there. I sat in a JAC once, and it was very cheap, compared to my grandmother's Voyage.

Well, they do, but it's often wearing a badge from a globally established company. VW and Chevrolet mainly.

political and economic instability is bad for heavy industry and it's needed investments. Vw/ford/gm can take that risk, a startup couldnt.

Actually South Africa has made their own cars such these:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protea_(c…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Mo…
http://www.allpar.com/world/south-af…
Though the second two are knock down kits. Only the first one could be called truly African.
And there are kit car makers and assemblers of other maker's cars:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samcor
And some big companies have a presence there too:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Pali…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Uno#…
And there was that huge armoured truck that Top Gear tested... forgot the name of it.
And here is a summary of the auto industry of South Africa:

Ecuador produced the Andino for years, the first ecuadorian car, it was small and ugly. The company also produced some cars based on Vauxhall model in the 80's and early 90's. GM Kia and Hyundai have factories here, so it's hard to compete, maybe if Andino did a better job back in the day..
We do produce motorcycles, a lot of them, using chinese technology, but I have no idea wich brands are chinese and wich are local, they're all the same.
Brazil has a big buses and truck production, but i don't thing they make regular family cars.
If we're talking economics, Chile is the one country I thing could start a new car brand, but taxes are low and cars are so cheap there It would be hard to compete.

Whoops... For some reason I read it as 'South African'. But I think the situation is more or less similar in parts of South America... like in Brazil.
